Daikoku-sama, one of the Seven Gods of Good Fortune, standing on a rice bale. Originally an incarnation of Shiva in Hinduism, Daikoku-sama is said to have come to Japan with esoteric Buddhism. Since ancient times, rice bales have been the center of the economy as well as an important binding technique for storing and distributing goods essential to life, such as salt and charcoal, in addition to rice. The motif of the bale, which expresses people’s earnest wishes for a harvest and their gratitude for a bountiful crop, has a wonderful craftsmanship. It is a perfect example of Japanese aesthetics.
