This knot has its origins in the mizura, an ancient male hairstyle, and is said to be a very old knot that can be seen in the wall paintings of the Takamatsuzuka burial mound. This knot is also used for the curtains of temples and shrines, lanterns, and the hanging roofs above the sumo ring. Knots were also used as talismans, amulets, and markers of sacred places. The “人” (meaning; human) knot has been used on armor and armors to prevent life-threatening or disastrous events from entering the armor, but the “入”(meaning; to enter) knot is also sometimes used, with the knot overlapping symmetrically. This is said to be one of the characteristics of Japanese knotting, as it represents good or bad luck, yin or yang.
