Horses have been deified as “divine vehicles” capable of traveling between the spirit world and the human world, owing to their incredible speed beyond human reach.
In rituals such as rainmaking and prayers for abundant harvests, horses were revered as important beings that connected humans with gods and influenced the fate of agriculture. It was once customary to offer live horses to shrines.Eventually, the practice of presenting prayers by a wider group of people led to the creation of “ema”.
As horses are regarded as the steeds of the Toshigami-sama, it is natural that horse-shaped shimekazari were created to symbolize this connection.
