RAIN AND THUNDERBOLT

This shimekazari with its several layers of hanging hemp fibers is a true masterpiece. It symbolizes life-giving rain pouring down from heaven, with thunder and lightning. In Japanese another name for thunderbolts is inazuma, literally: “the wife of the rice”. This name is probably coming from the old knowing that the rice is growing much better on fields where a lot of thunderbolts are going down. As we know today, the high temperatures of lightenings generate nitrogen oxides, which dissolve in the rain and bring natural fertilizer to the field. Among all the designs of shimekazari that have been passed down to us, this is the one we feel is the most simple, yet refined at the same time.
