The Chinese character for “painting” (絵)consists of two parts, one denoting “thread” (糸)and the other “assembly” (会). The ancient root of this character has the meaning “five-color embroidery.” Embroidery is a “assembly of threads” that shows a picture or patterns.

Yosuke Fujii is a man of the brush, who paints freehand with an ultra-fine brush. Without employing preliminary sketches, he spontaneously gives shape and colour to the things he feels.

Yosuke uses mainly silk garments and silk accessories as his canvas. His talent to paint without hesitation on a shiny, finished piece of silk-cloth, without the need for embellishment, is evident.

It looks like as though the smooth silk is glad to be the recipient of Yosuke’s brush strokes. Those who wear his tailored and painted garments and accessories will feel that the warm relationship between the cloth and the painting illuminates their surroundings.

This exhibition in our sunroom nichinichi is the second one to introduce a new artist. As canvases for his freehand painting, Yosuke Fujii will use sukiya bags, cases for tabi socks, fukusa-cloths for the tea ceremony, folding fans and fan cases made of colourful fabrics from France, India, Japan and other countries.

As the title of this exhibition (KACHOUYUSOU = Birds and flowers playing) suggests, Yosuke’s paintings depict lovely motifs, natural objects, a naked women looking into a mirror and many more. His unforgettable motifs show the artist’s free-floating spirit. They are full of humour and sensuality. For a moment they evoke the world of old tales and ancient painting scrolls.

The artist will be at the gallery from November 3 (Fri.) to 6 (Mon.). During this period the gallery space will change into a studio, where Yosuke will paint on tailored items. For customers wishing for a unique, customised piece, Yosuke will paint a design which suits their image.

We hope this exhibition will become an event of free spirit playing with colours and brushstrokes. We await your visit.
