As excavations show ladles, made from shells and an attached wood stick, have been used in Japan since the Neolithic period. Old tales report that a ladle was used in Shinto ceremonies praying for the health of the Japanese Emperor. Over the times the ladle has become an auspicious symbol for good health and good luck in life. This shimekazari, shaped like a ladle welcomes the New Year by literally “scooping up” good fortune. The five lines in the middle can be seen as fingers – as the human hand is the first and most simple ladle.

Each of shimekazari will be delivered in a gift box.
