The snake (hebi) has been the object of worship across many cultures in the world. In Japan the snake is regarded as a sea deity, which controls the water, that is indispensable for rice cultivation. People prayed to the snake god for appropriate weather and good harvest. The shimekazari shows a curled in snake, the three long bushes of vertical hemp fibers remind on pouring rain. This snake motif is especially strong and expressive, it can be enjoyed as a pure objet d’art.
