Canvas and paint. How does the encounter between the two begin and end? When does it become a painting and when does it move the viewer? Each of Stegmaier’s paintings has a astonishing and elegant presence, without imposing its existence. We gather around German Stegmaier and talk about his attitude, his techniques and his discoveries during the act of painting.

Gallery Nichinichi will host German painter German Stegmaier, based in Munich, following his first solo exhibition at the gallery in 2022.

German Stegmaier has a background in pure mathematics and philosophy of science, which he studied at university before he started to study painting. For him the act of painting itself continues along this path. Usually Stegmaier spends several years on each single painting. When it finally becomes independent from the artist’s hands and mind, the painting emerges from many layers of accumulated paint.

“When a painting begins, even I don’t know what it will become eventually.” Stegmaier’s approach to painting is not concerned with a planned beginning or a planned ending, but rather focuses on the sense of fulfilment that comes from simply being present in the moment. And the viewer can participate in this process and approach.

The color grey plays an important role in Stegmaier’s paintings. Grey reflects and sometimes absorbs light and color. It becomes a medium that allows us to calmly and deeply look into ourselves. At the same time, it invites us to float, as if we were in a space of weightlessness, freed from thoughts.

At gallery Nichinichi we do not show Stegmaier’s works in a neutral white cube. We display them in the familiar rooms of an old Kyoto townhouse. In these surroundings the basso continuo of grey and various colors resonates with the ever changing light and shadows, and also with the viewer’s perspective and state of mind. Stegmaier’s paintings thus appear new to us every time we look at them.
