Running. Running. Every day we run towards something.
Morning comes. Day spreads. Night slips in.
As if we could escape between the long and short hands of the clock, we keep running.

Carving. Sanding. Polishing.
Today as always, Mr. Fushimi works with bamboo.
He holds a piece of bamboo in his spoon-like palm.
Over the course of 244 concentrated steps he will transform it into a single modest spoon.

Curry and dreams.
Yogurt and prayers.
Stew and love.
These are the things Mr. Fushimi’s spoon will feed us.

An irreplaceable spoon born from a dizzying amount of effort.
With just one irreplaceable spoon like this we could all live better.

This is our first exhibition with Maki Fushimi.
On display are 300 pieces of bamboo cutlery in 23 different sizes.
Please come to meet Mr. Fushimi.

Maki FUSHIMI | 伏見眞樹
Born in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture in 1957. His father, Fumio Fushimi, was a graphic designer who worked for Light Publicity. Fushimi grew up feeling close to beauty and creativity from an early age. After graduating from high school, he began working as a carver at Hakunichido, a Kamakura carving studio. In 1984 he entered the workshop of Senrô Satô, where he learned how to produce lacquer objects for daily use. After ten years of apprenticeship he moved to Hayama-cho, Kanagawa Prefecture, where he continues to make lacquer ware for daily use. The first lacquered bamboo spoon he made was a small spoon for his third daughter to use for her first foods after breastfeeding. Today lacquered bamboo spoons have become the core of his work. He makes spoons of a wide variety, from small baby spoons to large salad servers.
