SEKIJIMA Hisako
“I love dissolving the strict, traditional basket making methods with their rigid approaches to the materials and structures and instead combining the materials in a new way.

Lines bend. Pliant and hard. Stiff and flexible. Folding layers. Drawing lines in the space. Filling space. Eliminating material to keep space. The shadow and the real. Repetition. Rhythm. Texture. Twining. Joining. Dividing. Piling up. Inside and outside. Hiding. Opening. Curiosity. Bundling up. Spheres. Touching. Hanging. Stuffed. Compressed. Weighing. Balancing. Warping. Distorting ….

My approach to the plant materials is spontaneous and mainly guided by my senses. However, I primarily use logical calculation to work out the form and the structure of the piece.”
